'Mushy' inspires Year 8s with story of overcoming stammer to become successful public speaker

We were thrilled to welcome Musharaf 'Mushy' Asghar into school as special guest speaker for Year 8 Oracy Focus Day.

Musharaf, who is best known for appearing in Channel 4 TV series 'Educating Yorkshire', earned his place as one of the show's most memorable characters. The documentary explored life at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury and Musharaf captured the nation's hearts as he worked to overcome his stammer - by speaking in front of the whole school!

Now aged 24, Musharaf is a successful keynote speaker who inspires audiences with his story. He spoke passionately to Year 8s at Tupton Hall about his drive to overcome the barriers he faced, whilst developing his ability to speak fluently and confidently. Students asked questions about his school experiences and what currently drives him to promote the skill of public speaking.

The day culminated with teachers working with students to help them prepare for their forthcoming ‘Big Speech’, as part of the school-wide focus on oracy. Musharaf then led an after school CPD session with staff, talking passionately about the role teachers played in helping him 'Find His Voice'.

Many thanks to Mrs Harvey-Grayson for working with Musharaf to enable him to visit and inspire us during our Year 8 Oracy Focus Day.
