Budding scientists bring home awards

Year 12 scientists at Tupton Hall School have achieved fantastic results in the Intermediate Biology Olympiad and the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.

These prestigious international events require knowledge of complex ideas, problem-solving skills, and a comprehensive understanding of core scientific principles. The events are recognised by the top universities and offer impressive content for UCAS applications.

Biology students excelled in the Intermediate Biology Olympiad; a competition consisting of a one-hour online multiple-choice paper. This is a challenging paper which covers both GCSE and year one A Level topics. Andrew Carter achieved a gold award, Grace Lane obtained a silver award and William Nelson, Kieraan Pattar, Joshua Snook, Dylan Soiza and James Wilbourne all received bronze medals.

Chemistry students have also succeeded in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge. The competition requires students to complete a difficult 90-minute chemistry exam. The paper is set by experienced teachers and university chemists and is designed to take Year 12 students beyond the syllabus, replicating methodology and knowledge relevant to higher education. Andrew Carter achieved a second gold award, James Wilbourne obtained a silver award and William Nelson, Caleb Milburn and Joshua Snook each earned a copper award.

Head of Key Stage 5 Science, Claire Spencer, said: “You have all done so well, it is such a prestigious event and you have hopefully inspired many future students to participate. You have done yourself and the school proud.”
