AI in Education: What Parents Need to Know

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming part of everyday life.

From search engines and social media platforms to voice assistants and online learning tools, many young people interact with AI without even realising it.

As these technologies become more widely available, many parents have questions about how AI is affecting education, what opportunities it presents, and what risks families should be aware of.

At Tupton Hall School, we believe that helping students navigate this technology safely and responsibly is an important part of preparing them for the future.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence refers to computer systems that can perform tasks that traditionally require human intelligence, such as answering questions, generating text, creating images, analysing information, and offering recommendations.

Popular AI tools can provide instant responses to questions, assist with research, support revision, and help students organise their ideas. These tools are becoming increasingly common both in education and in the workplace.

However, as with any technology, it is important that young people understand not only the benefits but also the limitations.

AI and Safeguarding

Just like social media and other online platforms, AI tools should be used thoughtfully and responsibly.

One important message for students is that AI should never be treated as a trusted friend or source of personal advice. AI systems cannot understand a student's individual circumstances and should never replace conversations with parents, teachers, or other trusted adults.

Students should also be reminded:

  • Never to share personal information with AI tools.
  • Not to disclose usernames, passwords, addresses, phone numbers, or school-related information.
  • To be cautious about sharing photographs or images online.
  • To speak to a trusted adult if they encounter inappropriate or concerning content.

Many AI platforms have age restrictions, and parents should take time to understand the tools their children may be using outside of school.

Spotting Misinformation

One of the most important digital skills students can develop is the ability to evaluate information critically.

Although AI can produce convincing answers, it is not always correct. Sometimes AI systems generate inaccurate information, provide outdated facts, or present opinions as facts.

For this reason, students should be encouraged to:

  • Verify information using reliable sources.
  • Cross-check facts before including them in assignments.
  • Consider where information has come from.
  • Question information that seems unusual or too good to be true.

These skills are becoming increasingly important in a world where information can be generated instantly and shared widely.

Supporting Learning, Not Replacing It

AI can be a useful learning tool when used appropriately.

For example, students may use AI to:

  • Generate revision questions.
  • Summarise a topic they are studying.
  • Gain alternative explanations of a concept.
  • Support planning and organisation.

However, AI should never replace independent thinking, effort, or creativity.

Learning happens when students engage with ideas, solve problems, make mistakes, and develop their understanding over time. While AI can support this process, it cannot replace the knowledge and skills that students build for themselves.

Preparing Students for the Future

Today's students will enter a world where AI is increasingly embedded within many industries and careers. Developing an understanding of how these systems work, how to use them responsibly, and how to think critically about the information they provide will be essential life skills.

At Tupton Hall School, we are committed to helping students become safe, responsible, and informed digital citizens. Alongside developing technological skills, we continue to place great importance on safeguarding, critical thinking, online safety, and digital resilience.

By working together, schools and families can help young people make the most of the opportunities AI presents while ensuring they remain safe, informed, and responsible users of technology.
