Supporting Student Wellbeing: Working Together to Help Young People Thrive

A young person's wellbeing plays an important role in every aspect of school life. When students feel happy, supported and confident, they are better able to engage with learning, build positive relationships and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

At Tupton Hall School, we believe that education is about much more than exam results. We are committed to creating a supportive environment where every student feels valued, encouraged and able to achieve their full potential.

Wellbeing at the Heart of School Life

Growing up can be challenging. Alongside their studies, young people are navigating friendships, social media, extracurricular commitments and decisions about their future.

Strong emotional wellbeing helps students to:

  • Build confidence and resilience.
  • Develop healthy relationships.
  • Cope with challenges and setbacks.
  • Engage positively with learning.
  • Feel connected to their school community.

This is why pastoral care plays such an important role at Tupton Hall School.

The Tupton Hall House System

One of the ways we support students is through our five-house system:

  • Turbutt
  • Kenning
  • Gladwin
  • Cavendish
  • Hunloke

Every student belongs to a house, helping them feel part of a smaller community within the wider school.

Each house is supported by a dedicated Head of House and a House Support Officer, who work closely with students and families to provide pastoral support, guidance and encouragement throughout the school year.

Whether a student needs help settling into school, managing friendships, building confidence or overcoming a challenge, there are always trusted adults available to listen and provide support.

Building Strong Relationships

Positive relationships are at the heart of student wellbeing.

We encourage students to seek help whenever they need it and know that asking for support is a strength, not a weakness. Through strong relationships with tutors, teachers, House Support Officers and Heads of House, students are able to access support quickly and feel reassured that someone is there to help.

Often, knowing there is a familiar face to talk to can make all the difference.

Developing Confidence Through Opportunity

Wellbeing is not only about supporting students through challenges. It is also about helping them grow, succeed and discover new strengths.

At Tupton Hall School, students have opportunities to develop confidence through:

  • Sports teams and competitions.
  • Performing arts productions.
  • Leadership opportunities.
  • Educational visits and trips.
  • House competitions and events.
  • Clubs and enrichment activities.

Taking part in these experiences helps students form friendships, build resilience and develop a strong sense of belonging.

Supporting Wellbeing at Home

Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting young people's emotional wellbeing.

Simple actions can make a significant difference, including:

  • Making time for regular conversations.
  • Encouraging healthy sleep habits.
  • Promoting a balance between study, screen time and relaxation.
  • Celebrating effort and progress.
  • Listening without judgement when children share concerns.

When schools and families work together, students are better equipped to navigate challenges and achieve success.

A Caring Community

At Tupton Hall School, we are proud of the caring and inclusive community we have built. Through our house system, pastoral support teams and strong relationships with families, we aim to ensure every student feels safe, respected and supported.

By working together, we can help young people across Chesterfield and Derbyshire develop the confidence, resilience and wellbeing they need to flourish both in school and beyond.

Because when students feel supported, they are empowered to achieve great things.
